Clunk in the steering...

So I've got an '01 F350 with 48K miles on it. I'm new to Fords and new to solid front axles, having been an IFS Toyota man in the past. There is a clunk in the front end when turning corners and sometimes when encountering stiff bumps in the road. I believe the clunking is coming from part of the steering linkage. It looks like an oversized tie-rod and has greaseable fittings at both ends. After greasing the fittings, the clunk went away, but came back 24 hours later. Is this a common problem and is there an inexpensive fix for it or am I going to wind up buying a new tie-rod?
