i m thinking of buying a 4x4 83' f250 with 300 I-6 motor but had alot miles but what size motor can replace it ? with same tranny? is 300 motor good? strong motor i heard? what are bad or good about this motor?
I have a 78' supercab w/the 300I 6 and I love it. It's not by any means a performance motor, but it does have a lot of torque!! It can do a lot of work, just not super fast.
As far as what motors will fit your truck, I'm pretty sure that all the small block ford motors should have the same bell housing bolt pattern, but you will have to fab some motor mounts or find some from a junkyard. A larger radiator might be needed as well.
On the 300's side again, I've known people w/250,000+ miles on theirs w/o a rebuild and they keep going forever! They are good motors, and do what they were designed to do.
To use the same transmission, you can use 300/4.9L, 302/5.0L, 351W/5.8L, but a V-8 will require new frame mounts, new Y-pipe, new radiator, new wiring, new brackets & accessories.
Personally, I would keep the six, or get a fresh one. They burn alot less gas than an 8, for one thing, plus they sound better. Now, I am pulling the six out of my truck (I just put it in this spring) solely because I want an automatic, and sixes and auto's don't mix well. Plus, I have a 351c that is brand new. The sixes can be built a long ways. With a mild build, like mine, they can easily see 200hp and over 300lbs torque. (BTW, mine's for sale)
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Nov-02 AT 08:33 AM (EST)]Mine ('95 EFI) doesn't get any better mileage than any V-8 - usually worse & it runs perfectly.
