Stupid Pedestrians!

I was on my way back from my National Guard drill, and had just stopped to get some chips and a drink from a gas station coming into my home town. I left the gas station and was going up the road (35 MPH), when a group of 4 people looked like they were going to cross the street (no cross walk), but then they stopped and stepped back onto the curb. Didn't think much of it, until the older guy in the group decides to dart across the street. I swerved away but he still almost got hit by my driver’s side mirror. There was no way I could have stopped fast enough. It almost seemed like he was trying to get hit! I turned at the next block so I could drive back by them. I told them to learn how to walk (in a more creative language), and went home.

Why in the world do people have to be so stupid? It's obvious they saw me coming because they stepped back onto the curb. Guy could have been badly injured or killed, and I would have most likely been blamed since there were 3 others with him. Oh well, all is good now.

In Alberta, Pedestrians have the right of way....no matter what happens.

In Ontario,if Pedestrians see a vehicle slowing down or stopping for them, they think the person in the vehicle is lining them up for a better hit

I'm sure the law here gives the pedestrian the right of way. I just thought about something kinda funny though, we just did a combat lifesaver refresher course yesterday at drill.

I remember a saying....."A pedestrian has the right of way.......until they are hit."

There was a Commercial Motorist(truck driver) going through a rural local in the wee hours of the morning. There was fog and he struck and killed two pedestrians. He called 911 on his cell phone and the local sherriff arrived shortly. The driver was sure he would be charged with something serious and was quite worried. The sherriff surveyed the scene of the accident and called the driver over to him. Sir, There have been two felonies committed here and these are the charges- that one sticking thru the windsheild is guilty of breaking and entering and that one in the field over there has left the scene of an accident. YOU are free to go.

Unfortunately the Pedestrian has the right of way crossing at an Intersection even if their walking against the "Don't Walk" sign. Make sure you have witnesses if you make contact, but then with the No Fault Insurance in Ontario Heaven Help Us.

I know what you mean man....I almost ran over a fat girl running across the street...lol, I can just imagine what would've happened to my truck...

I know pedestrians have the right of way, but that don't mean they can just walk the streets if they feel like it when there's cars coming. There's a reason for that bright WALK sign or NO WALK sign.

I hit a guy once, no serious injury thankfully, but the insurance man told me unless he has a suicide note in his pocket and jumps in front of you, it's YOUR fault.

Of course, I got rearended slowing for a ped back in '01, but I figure that was better than hitting him.

There ain't much you can do sometimes. Just do your best.
