ranger transmissions
Hello everyone--I am replacing the 5 speed manual transmission in a 1991 ford ranger 2.3L and I was wondering which yrs. would interchange---I have the access to a 1987 ranger with a 2.3L but the casing on the trans. looks a little different---If someone could tell me if they interchange I would be greatly appreciative..thanx.......Larry

there are two manual transmissions used on the rangers, the mazda and the mitsubishi. most likely the 91 has the mazda transmission and the 87 has the mitsubishi transmission. if you get the numbers off the side of the transmissions, i can let you know for sure. i am pretty sure you can use almost any mazda transmission from a 2.3L ranger from any year.
i am not sure if the bolt patterns are the same for the two trannies though.

Sooooooooooo-what you are saying is -if there are any differences in the housings then they will not interchange?I could barely get under the 87 truck to look at the trans but I was able to tell the length was the same --and it had a removable pan on the bottom and mine in the 91 doesn't-but as far as bolt patterns and such--I couldn't tell------
