Ranger Transmission interchange

Got a question on automatic transmissions. Was at the junkyard today and saw an '88 Ranger with an automatic transmission. I wasn't dressed to crawl under and count the bolts, but it did appear to have the double solenoid covers on the passenger side like my A4LD. This truck was some sort of v6 and mine is a I4 2.3L. Did they use the A4LD interchangeably on 4's and 6's in that period and if so, would it be compatible, moving from a 6 to a 4? Outside of one plug, it looks like everything else is vacuum operated. I know I should do my homework, crawl under there and count bolts, get the VIN number. Just want to be sure before I go to the trouble of pulling it out. Thanks for any comments or insights.

If it was an 88 it would have the 2.9 v6.. I don't think the transmissions will interchange between a 2.9 and a 2.3 i4 different bell/bolt pattern

Exchanging transmissions is a waste of time. Rebuild your old one for best results. You are going through the trouble of pulling it anyway. When you do it yourself and educate yourself on how to do it, you get to understand why they fail, how to prevent failure, and the results of rebuilding are far better than swapping someone else's trashed piece of junk into your ride.

I agree with you, Khan, on swapping. What I planned to do was have the one from the junkyard rebuilt then drop it into my truck. My reasons are two fold: I can keep driving on the old tranny while I gather funds for a rebuild, and second, my existing transmission has a crack that leaks slowly. The last owner drilled down and tapped one pan bolt extra long to fill the crack, but it still leaks. To return to my original question: would they have used the A4ld behind a v6 or an I 4 and if so, are they interchangeable?

K, thats a fair plan. Not all A4LDs are the same. The trans you really want is a 1994 4.0L A4LD, or at least the internal parts from one. The problem is that there are some differences between an '86 A4LD and a '94.

^+1 yup. I believe your overdrive/ lock-up is pressure controlled where the 94 is computer operated. you could get a aftermarket controller, and do some fudging about.

my $.02 YMMV
