I've got a 1991 7.3 idi with an auto that just developed a starting problem. I'm not getting 12v to the starter solinoid. If I short out the starter solinoid the starter motor turns. I traced the black wire back about 6" to another small relay... What does this relay do? Next step to trace the wires coming in to the relay for battery from the switch, or does it use a ground to start?
Did you check for power on both sides of the starter relay on the fender with key on and turned to start. The small wire sends power to close the relay does it have power key in start mode.
Next........
I would try putting the shifter in nuetral or wiggling it in Park to see if the manual position lever sensor on the trans is out of alignment. Check the MLP connector on the trans too. I would also check under the dash for the jumper for the Auto trans that replaces the clutch pedal start switch. It may/should have a red/light blue wire and be located under the dash to right of pedals.
Mystery solved! The relay in series with the starter relay was part of a alarm system... probably to disable the starter. The real problem was the ignition switch just quit working in the start function. I temporarily bypassed the start function of the ign switch with a push button switch under the dash. Guess I need to get one on order. Thanks for your help!
