Unhappy Cylinder Head Troubles

I'm going to sing my sad song for the forum members............
The 400 block and crank are sitting in my wife's laundry room beside the de-humidifier. My reconditioned rods are on their way home from "Crankshafts/R/Us". I have E-Talked to Tim Meyer about pistons. Problem?
HEADS--- My machine shop has gone through seven heads. Cracks, guides, seats, valves. I have thrown some cash away during this adventure and still appear to be empty handed. My wife wants her whole laundry room back and told me not to throw good money after bad. "If new heads are what it takes, let's get on with it". I must have read 90 threads on the "head" search page. I am frustrated. The 400 is going into my son's 1979 F-350 4X4 and I would like to have it done before he turns 16 this summer. I want low end performance.
Edelbrock, Aussie, World Products, whatever!!!!
Please help.
Thanks

You could start by calling Edelbrock to see if their heads are available now.

You could spend large dollars and get a set of CHI or AFD heads.

You could get a set of reconditioned Aussies. I think there is a dealer for those.

Then you could work with Tim Meyer and get the right dish in your pistons.

You also could pick the best set from the seven and have those rebuilt.

Here is a link to a set on Ebay. This guy is a dealer. There are other Aussie heads for sale on Ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...sPageName=WDVW

You will have to put this URL back together on one line, or just go to ebay under auto parts and accesories, cylinder heads and search for Aussie.

Also don't forget that a good pair of 2V Clevelands can still be had for a reasonable amount. You might want to check around at your local machine shops and see if they have some heads laying around. I got a set of bare 74 Clevelands for $100 from a local machine shop.

I'm not an expert, but I am pretty sure that if torque is your goal, then stock heads would be your best bet. The Aussy heads and cleavland heads are great for speed and rev's but they seem to lack the low end grunt. If you push your compression too high, you'll have a hard time obtaining low end power. I'd stick with a mild cam, intake, and carb (such as the Edelbrock combo) and stick in a set of Badger pistons with about a 9.5:1 compression. You could deck your heads and push it to maybe 9.8:1.

351M/400 heads and 351C 2V heads are basically identical. same port sizes in and out so the same manifolds and headers fit perfect. only small difference is the chamber volume, 76.2cc's for the C and 78.4cc's for the M/400. Tom Monroes book has an interchange chart that puts a 71 40 at 9.2:1 with 2V C heads and a 72-80 400 at 8.6:1 with 2V C heads, only .2:1(about a thimbles worth) higher than stock.

FYI-FWIW
Edelbrock says the heads are still a couple of months away.

I think the 302 Aussie heads are your best bet. If you match these closed chambered heads with custom pistons from Tim Meyer you can achieve any reasonable compression ratio you desire. Plus, the closed chambered heads allow for more of a "squish" or "quench" which promotes a more efficient combustion chamber. That means you can probaly get away with a little more compression and your still less likely to ping. Torque will not be an issue with these heads and the 400. This setup (along with other components) can easily achieve between 400-450 ft/lbs of torque.
