I am currently rebuilding a 256 cu in mercury Y block engine for my 1955 F100.
I would like to purchase a rebuilt distributor for it but can only find listings for 272 and 292 parts.
Can anybody tell me if these parts are interchangeable, and if not where I might be able to buy the correct parts
Yes, although there are some qualifications. Early engines had a distributor/carburetor combo designed to work together. But as far as will it drop in the the hole and mesh with the camshaft gear yes.
The oil pump drive may be an issue. Maybe Carl will clarify that. Does your current oil pump have a hex drive?
If it is a true car Dearborn block it will have a 13 tooth oil pump drive gear. You can change to the 14 tooth gear as well as change to the 14 tooth oil pump and drive shaft as used in 54 Cleveland and all 55-64 of either foundry.
If you want to upgrade to the later style, 57-64, distributor the 65 factory replacement style (O ring sealed similar to the 289) is stocked by NAPA and Advance Auto for under $60 including points and condenser.
If it is a F600 256 then it is a Cleveland, casting EBY above the oil filter.
If you are still shopping for parts have you considered making a 292 out of it?
Thanks for your help
I have a 272 and 292 in the workshop I will check into the pump drive etc.
The engine is matching numbers for the truck so i was hoping to restore it to orriginal.
I have refurbished the factory carburetor but was thinking I would run the 2bbl Holley on it

Consider this, could you perhaps find someone to rebuild the distributor that's in it now? Is there up and down play in the present one, or backlash play? If so, maybe these same outlets you have found with rebuilt distributers for 272-292, can direct you to who rebuilds theres or if they can, is the teeth on the end gear bad?? if so then why not see if the 272-292 can simply sell you a gear for a 272, then you wouldn't have to monkey with the hex drive or pump, also are the bushings/roller bearings bad (I'm not sure if those had roller bearings or bushings? knock out the ones you have and go to a bushing company, or roller bearing company, or is the whole shaft scored? I once rebuilt an old electric sander for my neighbor just for fun and went to a roller bearing company and was stumped when they were able to find the prepacked roller bearing for that old sander. also to find out whether that engine is the factory original, have you checked all the numbers to see if it is a US f100? I know Canada made a Ford pickup but called it a Mercury pickup (Looks just like our Ford F100's) other than the hood emblems and some instrument cluster differences, they may have used the 256 mercury Y back then .......Janet
The Truck is New Zealand assembled
Engine number matches the data plate information
Data plate matches the original ownership papers.
From what ford motor company New Zealand tells very few were built with 256 cu in engines.
Can anybody direct me to a more Mercury specific site
