Idle timer
The issue of the need for a turbo timer is subject to debate, and it can be argued both ways.
There are two types of "turbo timers/minders" that I am aware of. One type is a timer that lets the truck run for a pre-determined time which you have to set before you turn off the key, and the other type uses temperature reading from a thermocouple (pyrometer) and alows the engine to keep running until it cools down to a pre-determined temperature.
You can get the "timer" variety by clicking the "PARTS SHOP" icon at the top of the page and going to Motorhaven ( this site sponsor). (I don't think that they sell the temperature type, although I can't be completely sure of that.)
ISSPRO makes a unit which connects to a thermocouple and shuts off the engine at a pre-determined temperature and there are several vendors which carry the "ISSPRO Turbo Temp Minder".
I have not installed either of these units yet, however I am leaning towards getting the ISSPRO unit since I have ISSPRO gauges already installed.
Happy shopping....
The X-Monitor is a digitial gauage unit that measures EGT, Boost, and Tranny all in one compact unit that allows you to keep your driver side pillar handle. See photos in my gallery.
The CES module talks to the X-Monitor and keeps the truck running until it has reached the temperature that you specified, or until a timer expires, or until someone taps the brake pedal.
I have my pyro probe mounted preturbo and have my shut down set for 350 deg. Most of the time my truck will immediately shut off when I stop and turn off the key. There are a few instances where it may take up to 30 seconds for the temperature to drop to 350. Generally this doesn't matter whether I'm towing or unloaded. It is more a function of how much time I spent decelerating, coasting, etc. up to the parking spot.
