MSD coil

I bought an msd blaster 2 coil. It came with a resistor and according to the drawings must be used when you have points. I have points.
I was told by an old timer that old trucks like my 66 used to have a resistor on the fire wall. Mine does not. The old timer called his older buddy and asked about it. The older timer said after a certain year they got rid of the resistor and used a resistor wire instead.
So how can I find out if I have a resistor wire? And if I do should I still use the msd resistor that came with the coil?

Don't know if a 66 had them, but it's called a "pink wire" by some. You will see it under the dash from the ignition switch on trucks that have them. The resistance is provided by the wire itself to drop the voltage seen at the coil in operation to around 6 or 7 volts. This wire was bypassed during starting so a full 12 volts would give a fatter spark and help the engine light off when cold. 12 volts will roast older style coils on a continuous basis, or at least the points?

Get your volt meter and measure the voltage at the coil when the key is in the run position.

To resist or not to resist.

You have a resistor. Unless someone removed it (unlikely since you haven't fried your points). Do this. Install the coil and connect it like the one you are replacing. Then run a 18 gauge wire from the I post on the starter relay to the positive post on the new coil. You get 12v through the start circuit during start-up and 6-7v in run when you release the key. Later you may want to consider a Pertronix Ignitor system to replace the points. That system likes 12v but will run off 6-7v. When using a Pertronix or the HEI available on ebay I connect 12v through a Bosch relay to provide a nice consistent 12v to the coil. JMHO!

Wouldn't that mean the circuit would see both the resistor wire in the truck and the internal resistor in the coil?

You should get clarification from MSD.

I'm reasonably sure you can use the supplied .8 ohm resistor or the stock resistor but you should not need both.

almost.
get your voltmeter and measure the voltage at the coil *while the truck is running*.

if you just measure with the key on, you won't see the resistance (unless the points just happen to be closed.)

alternatively, you can ground the negative side of the coil and test while the truck is not running...but its easier to just start it.

if you have points- you need a resistor.

Your truck came with a resistor wire and not a resistor on the firewall. The MSD coil should be the same resistance as the factory coil.
