Question 302 vs. 289 heads

I just bought a used 302 but it has 289 heads. Why would someone put 289 heads on a 302?

But why use 289 heads, higher compression or what. what does the 289 heads have that 302 heads don't?

Casting numbers on engine blocks, cylinder heads cannot be cross referenced to Ford part numbers.

Both the 289 & 302 were used in 1968 Passenger Cars.

Smaller combustion chamber

Depending on which heads, the 289 heads are a bolt on change and generally offer a smaller combustion chamber and higher compression ratio. A little more power. Cheap "upgrade".

There is very little difference in any of the SBF cylinder heads, and IMO they're all WAY to freakin small for these motors.

289 and 302W heads are basically the same, valve sizes, port size etc. The only difference in the heads would be in the size of the combustion chamber. Most, but
not all 289 heads had small combustion chambers which help achieve more compression.
The 1968 302 4V heads also had small combustion chambers but the 2V heads had a
larger chamber for less compression.

How do you know the heads are 289 heads?

I have a pair of 66 289 heads with 54cc chambers, and pushrod slots. The small chambers will raise compression. They used to be the hot ticket for hopping up a Windsor. They can be machined for 1.90/1.54 valves.

Grey, it looks like there are some missing casting numbers such as the E6TE heads. Truck heads, I know, but you have included some truck heads in your listing.

Edit: D'oh! I know how you know they're 289 heads. They say 289 on the head!

in '66 they went to rail rockers, thermactor bumps, and round push rod holes.... everything i've read says '65 (C5) were the last year for push rod slots.

When you type 8 & D together, you get that smilie, unless you disable smilies in text (like I just did...it's gone).

Click Edit, then Go Advanced, then scroll down and click on the box next to: disable smilies.
