heater

I have an "82" f150, 302, 4x4, the heater is'nt working. I thought the thermostat was stuck open so I replaced it but that did'nt help. The hoses to the heater get hot but no hot air in the cab. I assume the heater core is plugged. I'm not losing any fluid, so is there a way to flush the core? unsure of what to do. Please help.

Me and you are in the same boat, lol. My old f-150 put out heat without a thermo in it. i got a new one with the 4.9L and it won't even put out heat without a thermo, and when it had one, it was the same thing. my heater core is brand new, less than 4 months old and the cooling system is about as clean as you can get, its got me stumped too.

Put your t-stat back in, these engines are really cold-blooded. As far as heat goes, check the linkage running into the engine compartment, to the little bellcrank above the heater motor. This should move when you switch from cold to hot. If not, repair it. Also, pull the heater motor off, and check inside for debris. You'd be surprised by what you can find in there.

Pull the evaporator core & clean all the leaves out of it. Then consider swapping to an '87-91 wiper valance.

I agree with the above posts. When I got my truck, the defroster didn't work too well. I started digging around in the windshield outlets and found pencils, watches and all kinds of stuff. After that it work good enough. This past summer I wanted to get the ac going and pulled the evaporator core out of the firewall housing to put a new one in. The old core was full of dirt, and when I took it off, you could see up in the duct were there was a air door and there was more pencils, pens, and junk. I put the new core in and got it going and immediately noticed an airflow difference from the dash vents. And now that it is cold, wow! That heater will run you out of the truck!

Sorry for the late reply. I just joined the board a couple of days ago.

I noticed my heater wasn't working in my 84 F150 earlier this fall. While it was in the shop getting my new 302 installed, I asked my mechanic to take a look at the heating system. It turns out, my heater core was clogged. He flushed it out, now it will run you out of the truck. He said he didn't even pull the heater core out of the truck. He Just disconnected the hoses and flushed with pressure somehow.

I hope this helps.

I debated on whether or not to post this Q here or not, but I suppose it is related enough.

I could never get air flow through the defrost or floor vents. It always came from the panel vents.

This weekend I took my dash apart, took off the heater core cover, and I could see the door that controls this airflow. I found that when the vacuum motor is pulling on the door, to position it for the panel vent plenum, it seems to work fine.

If I try to go to heat, it is pushing on the door, the door just flops around, and doesn't seal off the duct to the panel vents. I reached in with my hand, and manualy moved the door to where I thought it should go, and sure enough, I now have air flow to the other vents. I can switch between defrost and floor no problem.

Now, if I switch my control to Vent, it will work, but I can't go back to heat/def without taking off the heater core cover.

My question is, how is this door supposed to be hinged? I can only assume a hing has broken because of the way it acts when the vacuum motor is pushing. It doesn't have any way to hold the position so it can swing correctly.

Has anyone seen this?
Do I have to replace the whole plenum to fix it??

Thanks for any help.

Rick

It has a film hinge - the whole flapper is molded with a thin line for it to bend on, and over time, it breaks off. You can probably just screw on some cheap metal hinges.

I had a plugged heater core in my '73 mustang, and I just took the heater hoses loose at the engine end, and then took a garden hose with a high pressure nozzle and squirted it in both hoses alternately. After doing this for awhile, it started to loosen up the gunk in there and finally flushed it out. After that, you had to turn the heat DOWN! It really worked.

My E150 engine would not get warmed up after two hours of driving so I put a high temp t-stat and as far as temp goes it not only runs perfect warm but I can fianlly heat up my van.
Now let me tell you about my broken piston....
never mind I will do it on another posting lol. Good luck
