Remember When.....

Well these are not actually from me but very interesting, hopefully you can add some things.

Television went off about 11:00 PM and came back on at 6 AM

Cartoons were only broadcast on Sat. morning!

Milk was 5 cents a Pint

Stores and businesses closed at 5 and were not open on Sundays

Your milk was delivered overnight, and put into a small box on your front step or porch.

They tested sirens for Civil Defense. Monthly, and had to leave you classrooms and kneel down in the hallways, with you coats over our heads.

Only three TV channels, all in black and white, and you had to get up from your chair to switch channels.

No VCRs.

8mm cine cameras.

The word 'Gay" had an entirely different meaning.

You could walk most inner city streets without getting mugged.

Pop was served in glass bottles and you had to have an opener to get the lid off...and you could actually return the bottles for $$$.

Pull tabs on cans.

Funeral homes doing ambulance service

Telephones were the main means of communication at work.

At one time the old Beetle WAS the New Beetle.

A real live person answered the phone when you called.

$.40 for a pack of smokes

About 1am the last program on T.V. was over, the station played the National Anthem and went off the air unitl about 5 or so.

Hopefully you older ones can add some things to bring back fond memories

I remember all that very well! I quit smoking when smokes got up to $.40 a pack. I was 34 years old then.

Voyage to the bottom of the sea

going to the dealer with mom and dad when they traded our 64 Falcon 2-dr hardtop for the new 66 Pontiac Tempest - WHAT A MISTAKE that was!!! and standing by helplessly (I was 5) while our Pekinese took a dump on the shiny showroom floor
I guess he didn't like the trade either

"super-*****" - those hard rubber ***** that bouced REALLY high!

Bazooka bubble-gum that cost 1 cent per piece

those colorful glass "clackers" that would shatter if you "clacked" them too hard!

3 cent postage to send a letter

gas wars and 19.9 cents per gallon!!!

Ah....the good ole days!

"Mechanical " dial tone. And calling anyone in town by dialing the last 4 digits.

Party lines. Our family was on a 6-party line until 1975!

The local car dealer with gas pumps out front. And a kid that came out and pumped the gas for you!

The 4th, UHF TV station. But you had to have that round antenna, the reception was always terrible, and only that weird family at the end of the block (you know, with the Studebaker and the mom that never wore any makeup) ever watched "educational television" anyway.

Carbon paper and mimeographs.

"Civil Defense" shelters with those yellow-and-black signs.

Always going to the bank to make a deposit.

I'll think of more.........

The ice cream man had an old truck with running boards and wood spoke wheels. The windows in back were double-hung sash windows, and the refrigerant was block ice. Us kids who didn't have any money for ice cream would beg for a chunk of ice, and the driver, who looked like Clarabell, would chip us off a piece with his ice pick.

Speaking of Clarabell, we had one of the first TVs on the block, and would race home from school (yeah, we walked - never heard of a school bus) and sit on the floor and watch the test pattern until Buffalo Bob, Princess Summerfall Winterspring and Howdy came on. There were a couple more characters, but I can't remember them right now.

We rolled up our pantsleg on the right side, 'cause none of our bikes had chain guards (or fenders). Only one guy on the plock had a power mower, and it was more cantankerous than he was. All the kids would hang out and watch him cut the grass with his marvelous new invention.

He had a "cigar" tree in his front yard. Real big leaves, and long green seed pod things. We'd pick them off and throw them out in the yard and let them dry in the sun for a few days until they were brown and hard, then cut off the ends and smoke 'em. Most all of the grownups smoked, so us kids were always trying to find new things to smoke, so we could be like the adults.

.50 was good for a bottle of pop and a candy bar. (I guess that was when .50 was celebrated as such by kids and not a crapper, I mean rapper).

grass was something you cut with a lawn mower and if u had a weed problem you had better get to the garden and get it taken care of before it took over all the other plants!!

Before my time, but saw a '57 or '58 Plymouth with 392 hemi AND a factory record player that folded out of the back seat. A different kind of disc player, huh?

I do remember the old comic books with such gimmicks as sending a few cents to some address and getting a whale in the mail. Fell for that when I was but knee high to a grasshopper.

I also remember driving to my high school (population 70, 9-12) with shotguns or .22s and seeing other vehicles with such hunting weaponry proudly displayed. Try that nowadays, wouldn't be too funny.
