How about saving money from cutting grass in order to buy a model car? Building model cars with your buddies? Bomb drills in elementry school. Building ramps to jump on your bicycle. "Camping" in the yard. Not telling your parents that a neighbor whipped you because then THEY would whip you for "acting up"? Getting in a fight at school and having the coach put boxing gloves on you both to settle it "once and for all". Having to shake hands after the fight and then becoming friends?

The Danny Thomas signs that winked.
Pop machines that had the push down handle, then open the door and pull out your selection.
Stingray bicycles. Orange Crates and Lemon Peelers by Schwin.
Model car glue that actually worked and kids could buy it.
Church Keys.
Hunting pop bottles in the ditches as the only way to get money.
Mowing 2 acres of grass for $3 a month.
Not having a TV or a radio in the house.
Asking to turn the radio on when one was given to us. (Okay, but only for a half hour)
The radio was as tall as I was.
Comic books were 12 cents.
Bazooka bubble gum. The inside of the wrapper was a mini comic strip about a GI, I think. Bazzoka Joe? How do you spell bazuka?
Two sets of clothes. New clothes for school. Last years clothes for after school and you had BY-GAWD-better-change when you got home from school.

Ok one more post on this thread (this is so much fun!)

How about Burpee seeds and "live Sea Monkeys" ordered from the back of a comic book? Or S&H Green Stamps?

I watched those grainy video shots of the Moon landing on a B/W TV and all the first shots with animal experiments. Was in elementary school when Sputnik went up. Remember when JFK was shot and all the attendant happenings, including Ruby shooting Oswald in that Texas Police tunnel. Was in Seventh Grade when that happened.

I liked putting together sailing ship models and airplanes....my dad was a Navy AEC CPO. Yes, the airplane Glue DID work back and for 10 or 15 cents you could buy it as a kid.

Anyone remember the old "Famous Monsters of Filmland" mags by Forrest ("Forry") Ackerman?

My sister played with the new Barbie Dolls/Ken while I played "war" with the original G.I.Joes. Still have them including the "German Soldier". Used to watch all those Quinn Martin shows "Combat" and "12 O'Clock High". "Rat Patrol" and other shows like them. Was a tomboy when young.

Leonard Bernstein's "Young People's Concerts". Of course, the original "Star Trek". "Lost in Space", "The Invaders", "Outer Limits"

Skateboards when they were simply wood and painted red. The wheels looked like regular skatewheels. For that matter, regular skates with the shoe clamps you tightened with a key.

Thanks everyone for helping me remember the 'simpler times!!!'

How 'bout:

Sinclair gas (In 1971, coming home from my grandmom's funeral, we drove through Greeneville, Tenn., and Dad had just filled up the tank at an Esso station, we then drove through town and a Gas War!!!) Last station in town (A Sinclair) had gas for 1.9¢!!! Dad says, "Dad-burn it. Just my luck, I gas up and then drive through a dern gas war!"
(He was angry 'cause he had to pay 21.9¢ per gal.!!!)
The car. . . 1967 Pontiac Catalina 2+2 w/ a 428. Torque out the ying-yang!
(I later remember churning the back tires off and having to go to 'Goodyear' and buy two "Custom Power Cushion - Polyglass" J78-14s to replace 'em BEFORE I went home!) Boy. . . I was dumb! That was two weeks pay @ $1.10 an hour. The guy putting the tires on laughed, 'cause he peeled the rubber out of the fender wells. (Oh yeah. . . It was REAL funny.)

Blue Circle hamburgers (a penny apiece)
White Castle hamburgers ("Buy 'em by the bag")
"The Gloden Arches" That's right. . . Mickey D's.
Orange Crush
Nehi Grape (Already mentioned. I can taste it, though.)
1954 Ford Customliner w/ a '3 on the tree'
The FBI starring Efram Zembalist, Jr.
The Rifleman (1st run. . . not syndication)
Wanted - Dead or Alive (1st run)
Steve McQueen and his "Mares Leg"
Boones Farm - Apple
"Tango"
Superman comics (I had a #2 that got 'pitched out' when we moved. I wonder what that would be worth, now? I could probably put all of my kids through college with that, and buy a new house!)
1967 Plymouth GTX
1963 Ford Galaxie 500XL (Red. Gotta be RED!) Hot!!!
1962 Corvette
Waiting for 'word' that your (fill in family member's name) was coming home from Viet Nam.) Heck, countin' the days until YOU LEAVE Viet Nam!
Marlboro 'Hard-pack' (10¢ per pack out of a vending machine.)

Your first child's birth. (Heck. . . all of 'em. All four.)

Bob Hope -
"Thanks for the memories. . . . . ."

Next. . . . . . .

I remember when oil came in cans. You had to have a funnel with an opener you stuck in the end. Or else you used a pocket knife and a regular funnel and made a mess....

Transistor radios that you had to hold to your ear to hear
How many of you had the little red and white transistor radio, shaped like a little satellite, no battery, you just alligator clipped to a piece of metal and screwed the top antenna up and down to find all those cool stations? It had a one ear piece to listen with. I'll bet you a dollar they are worth some bucks now!!! Guess I gotta do an ebay search for one and see if any are still around.

Remember when JFK was shot and all the attendant happenings, including Ruby shooting Oswald in that Texas Police tunnel. Was in Seventh Grade when that happened.
I was in 6th grade and remember it only too well.

Superman comics (I had a #2 that got 'pitched out' when we moved.
I was given a stack of comics from the early 40's. Superman, Batman .. THICK comic books. Yeah ... they put todays scrawny little rags to shame.

I still love this thread!! You people are bringing back so many good memories. Keep typing, ladies and gentlemen.
