Question Lug Nuts

I sure do need some input as to how tight the lug nuts should be on a 2002 F250 SD, CC, Short bed PS. The owners manual says 150-165 ft/lbs but that just doesn't sound right.
I was also told that Ford sent out a letter saying that this figure was wrong and what to tighten them to but I didn't get it.
I always thought it was about 85-100 ft/lbs.
My local tire store says the same as the owners manual, but I just don't think they are up to date.
Can anyone give me some good ref or input.

Thanks
Hope you all had a good Holiday..

Yep that's about right, I just bought new wheels and tires and they only tightened them down to 125 because they have the acorn lug nuts. He said they would start to bur the wheel after that.

Haynes repair manual-F-250 & F-350 Super Duty pick-ups
"Wheel lug nuts
2000 and earlier modles...148 Lb-ft.
2001 and later models......155 Lb-ft."

'01 Owners Guide-"Bolt size M14 x 2.0" 200Nm or 150 Lb-ft. Torque specs are for nut and bolt threads free of dirt and rust. All 2 peice flat wheel nuts, apply a light machine oil between the flat washer and the nut. Do not use oil or grease on threads."

I've been putting mine at 150 ft. lbs, going back 4 hours later to recheck due to strech...then check one month later, just to make sure.

Yea, they do bur the wheel at 150, but that's how they lock on, the washers have ridges on the back side...just don't take them off except when needed.

The factory wheels are centered on the hub by the center of the wheel.

When you use aftermarket wheels you need to buy the tapered lugnuts to center the wheels.

My arms have built in torque wrenches, I can usually get within 5-10lbs. Wheels I can get good on(except weld wheels, or a 2-3 piece wheel)

.... which just means you've used the wrong kind of aftermarket wheels! I sure wouldn't put lugcentric wheels on a vehicle designed for hubcentric wheels, but maybe that's just me...

I see s/d's every day with wheels like mine. Never heard of any problems. Do you know something I don't?
