i have two 9 inch rearend axles one is geared way low and the other is 3.00. both of them i believe are 28 spline. i would like to know if there would be anything in the way of just switching the two pumpkins?
Well, you don't really exchange the pumpkin. You can exchange the carrier assembly though. (sometimes called a chunk) If they are both set up for a 28 spline, there is no problem.
Welcome to the easy swap world of "The Poor Man's Quick Change".
Clean the housing out, make sure your driveshaft yoke matches, make sure your carrier has an oil fill if the housing doesn't and a new gasket and if you are particular, new copper washers and away you go.
I want to do a 3rd member swap on my 9" also to get from 2.47:1 to a 3.50:1 to match my front on my 77 f-150 4x4 351m/c-6. Is there a do-it-yourself instuction floating around here somewhere?
Oh and the 9" is out of a 82'F-150 thats where the 2.47:1 came from(I spun the tire 20x and counted drive shaft turns)
Just make sure it isnt a 9 3/8" pumpkin, they were used in some trucks as well as the big cars with 460's. Looks like 9" but a hair bigger.
Most were real tall gears in the 2's
BTW Ive been around that rear since they were new, always were called pumpkins or chucks.
