Ford used 3/8th copper or brass washer when they assembled the 9 inch pumpkin to the housing. I am having trouble finding replacement washers. What is the purpose of the washers and if they are required where can they be purchased.
They help keep the nuts from digging into the case, which, I suppose in extreme cases, could cause cracks. They also help seal it.
I found mine at a Ford dealer, but we are talking 1992. Since a Ford dealer will probably tell you the 9 does not exist at this point, you can try FTE parts guy, or Numberdummy can find some at other locations.
Have you tried NAPA?
You could drill holes in pennies, but they aren't copper enough to do the same thing, methinks.....
The guys that I know don't use the copper washers. I used RTV (small amount) in place of the gasket with no copper washers and it worked fine... absoulutey no leaks.
I see they are less than $10 shipped... not bad! They are designed to squish and seal against the stud. Again, they not needed if you use RTV, but I would use them if using a regular gasket.
I used a paper gasket and rtv sealant when I rebuilt my 9" 10 years ago, flat washers, no copper washers, it still doesn't leak. Do use original self locking nuts, or "hi temp" locking nuts as replacements, and flat washers. Ford used copper washer instead of sealants, quicker to assemble and nicer on the installer's clothes and throat- RTV exudes vinegar. I use $4 a tube bath and kitchen silicon seal (rated 400 deg F on package) in a caulk gun rather than the expensive stuff from the auto supply. The special oxygen sensor safe stuff is for intake manifolds and exhaust plumbing, no oxygen sensors in a differential. The white sealant slop won't win you any prizes at car shows, however.
