Swapping pumpkins from a 2 speed to a single speed axle

I ave a 2 speed axle (unknown as of yet ratio) in one of my 79 f 600s... and I want to use the axle housing... I have a pumpkin from a non 2 speed axle,, 6.17 fully built with detroit locker ... both the housings appear to be the same... (F172 variants)

Is it possible to swap pumpkins?.. and would the 2 speed then work with the 6.17 pumpkin (provided I swap all the appropriate parts.. hubs axles etc).. or are the gear sets for single speed and two speed axles different in some respects?

thanks

Are they both Eaton housings?

If the pumpkin will bolt in, and the axle splines are the same, you should be good to go.

You are talking the entire assembly, correct?

DS may be an issue, not sure about the rear ujoint, but you'll see that first doing the swap. Better have something really HD to handle that assembly when it falls out of the housing.....

all the parts that make it a 2 speed are in the carrier and the inside edge of the ring gear. I don't see how you can have a driveshaft fitment problem. I belive the housings between a single speed and 2 speed are the same. this type of swap is done all the time.
Are the splines the same (size and number)on the axle shafts?
like the #2 respondant said get ready to catch or get the heck out of the way. a 17 series pumpkin is 150 or 200 lbs.

thanks for the info

the axle shafts are 34 spline on the non 2 speed.. I havent opened up the 2 speed yet... and I use a forklift to move this stuff around.. even with two people lifting manually its a knuckle breaker.. literally

Driveshafts will not be an issue .. they are custom

Talking Punkin Swap

Sometimes the punkins will swap OK but sometimes the housing on a single speed rear will need to be trimmed around the edge to allow a two speed chunk to fit in.
