Welcome to FTE!

Need some more info. For example, it could be a heater core issue - did you check the heater hoses that run to the fire wall (the ones that go to the heater core) to make sure they both are hot? Is the the blower motor (fan) working OK? When you switch modes (floor, defrost, etc.) does the air come out of the proper vent openings? If yes to all of the above, then you probably have a blend door problem. If the blend door is busted, a "workaround" can be found here:

A blend door repair (replacing the plenum) can be found here:

I just ran into this same problem on my 98 4.0 explorer. The heat will work when you first start the truck but if you turn the heat off while your driving the heat will not come back. The fan works and the air comes out the right vents, it's just cool instead of hot. The temp gauge reads normal so I'm not sure.
