i have a 2000 explorer and the dash light came on "check gas cap" well i got gas and put back on... figuring wasnt tight but it was.. well few miles down the road light went off.. cool.. all ok.. nope next time i drove it...the "check gas cap" light came back on.. but this time the check engine light came on too .
anyone have any ideas? other than taking to ford.. for them just to reset it and charge me up the yingyang
I would start by resetting it yourself, just unhook the negative battery cable for at least two minutes. This should clear any codes you have then if the lights show back up then you might have a sensor/cap problem.
Just had the "Check Fuel Cap" illuminate on my '02. Replaced the old cap with a new one on the advice of a Pepboys mechanic but no change. When I went back to him he apologised and said he should have mentioned that it would take a few days and maybe 50 miles or so before the computer logic re-set the light. It's been a few days and about 100 miles and the light is still on! I'll try dis-connecting the battery but if that doesn't work then it's into the shop. The handbook says that the "Check Engine" light will be triggered if you drive around with the "Check Fuel Light" on for any length of time. I know this isn't a solution but it may just add to the knowledge-base. I'll update my results.
The light sets when it detects a large leak in the Evaporative Emissions system.. the control the detect a fuel vapor leak. If you have a hose off on the system or a bad seal, it can set that light. It's not ALWAYS the gas cap (just 90% of the time)
Just had mine come on our 2003 Explorer, so we bought a new cap for it and I reset the gas cap light with a scan tool. Hopefully that will fix the problem. Anything else that can cause it to come on that's common other then the gas cap?
