Water in Fuel - trouble code

How often are you guys draining the water for the fuel pump? I have 6K miles on my '05 F350 and I started getting the "Water in Fuel" message. How come the '05s dont have the drain valve like the earlier 6.0s? You have to unscrew a plug with an allen wrench. What a pain!

On my '04 I had to drain 3 times in 15K...complained to the dealer and they said there was a bulletin for the early 04s HFCM. Mine was a couple weeks past the cutoff date but they replaced it anyway, light hasn't come on since and that's been about 6/7k ago

All the 6-ohs have the STUPID allen wrench release !!!
You have to be UNDER the truck to drain it in your face -
stupidest design I've ever seen !!!!

(Can u tell I am not in love with their design )

The first time mine came on - I did drain it... found that sediment DID cause a problem with the original units and they did replace it under warranty...

They recomend draining monthly too - which I don't ...
I TRUST that the water in fuel light will tell me when I need to...

Which I do now that I have about 20K miles since the last time I did it...

Supposedly the mid-production '05 changes include a completely new HFCM with a lever operated drain with what looks like a little spigot to attach a hose to. WHAT A CONCEPT!! I'll be buying one of those to retrofit to my early '03, once they're available from the parts counter.

Nah, with the original brass plug you couldn't get it out even when you wanted to, so there's no chance of a leak and fire!

(Though to be honest, the flash point of diesel is so much higher than gas, a fuel-leak fire is almost unheard of anyway.)
