Post 9 inch drain plug

Just wondering if anybody has ever put a drain plug in a ford nine inch rearend to make fluid changes easier. A siphon hose just wont work to siphon the fluid out of mine. It would be a lot easier than pulling the axles and removing the diff. I was thinking about drilling a hole in the case and then taping it to the same thread size as the fill plug threads. Then use a fill plug in the hole. Anybody done this?

It would work, just make sure not to put it directly on the bottom of the housing. Setting it of to the right hand side seems to work ok. I don't think you will be able to tap the housing, though, as it is just steel. Try drilling a hole, and welding on a nut or something.

Also make sure you get the plug with the magnetized end to trap metal fragments.

I put one in this '75 Bronco I built for a friend. You can see it in one of the later pics, but I wasn't worried about getting it all the way on the bottom because I didn't want it to drag.

Its easy to do. All you need to do is drill a hole of proper size use a tap and die set to put threeads in it and maybe weld a gaurd to protect the plug if you put it on the bottom of the diff.

But if you drag a rock, you could fold the guard over the plug or rip a hole in the bottom of the axle when the guard REALLY snags something. It's not worth THAT much risk to get every last drop out - mount it a little higher.

just one more thing- where do you find a drain plug that flares out at the end so it will tighten up? i mean if you put a stock plug in it wont tighten- it'l just spin.

If you're tapping your own drain port, use a PIPE threaded tap - they taper so the plug won't go all the way thru.
