Pitman Arm picture?

I have a 99 F150 4WD Lariat. I have the common squeek I hear and read about. May be ball joints; may be pitman arm. I am just unsure what the pitman arm looks like or where it is. Could someone help me out?

Also, where can I find a grease needle? Do these just screw on to the end of the grease gun?

The pitman arm, better known as the idler arm (if this is what I think you are talkin about..), is on the left side of the steering tie rod.

It looks virtually the same as the power steering arm, but it is on the left side of the vehicle and has 2 grease zerks and it is also bolted to the frame with 2 large bolts.

Laying under the vehicle, and applying pressure up and down on the main tie rod, it should not move, and if it does, most of the time the idler arm is bad. The idler arm will not cause a pull, but it will cause the tires to wear a bit funny, it also causes a sloppy steering that most don't even notice.

A grease needle can be purchased at any parts house, but just remember to apply a silicone sealant too the punctured area to seal the hole and keep out moisture. Also make sure to clean the area well before applying the sealant.

Most grease needles have a zerk on one end so that it can fasten to the grease gun quickly.

That explains it well. Thanks. Does the pitman arm go out in these trucks often? Is the pitman arm hard to change?

Other than the squeek I don't think I've seen any worn out or anything.
Idler arms do wear out though.

The idler arm is usually one of the first things to get loose in the front end.
