Loud diesels (including PSDs) firing up early in the AM get me annoyed quickly too. But, I do have to point out that maybe the dude in the 40' 5'er IS home. Those lucky bastages!
Last time we were RV-ing, there were two "women" at a site next to us with a new Dodge. I have to say that I am HUGELY impressed with the low sound levels of the new CTD. IMO, they are less noisy than the 6.0 PSD. Still no where near as quiet as the V10 though.
So, I have this friend, a very good friend, he's a banker. He has a new Dodge with the 24 valve CTD, we were shooting the breeze the other day, he was teasing me about the mpg of my V-10. I said "dude, that is basically a 10 cyl small block". When he looked at me with the vacant stare I KNEW. I asked him something about his diesel, just as a little test, and he said "I don't know how many cylinders it is, I think it's a V-8, or maybe a V-6, I dunno, I know I have to put diesel in it, not gas". After I got done laughing (not AT him, with him) I asked him why he bot the diesel, he said "the salesman said I'd get 30 miles a gallon". I asked him if he was, he said "not yet, but maybe after it's broken in at 100,000 miles I will".
But I digress, that CTD is VERY quiet, very very. But not as quiet as my 10 turning 1 burning (open diff), peace ! Ken
Letting a psd idle for a long time isnt a big deal as long as you can put a load on it and burn out the unburned fuel and oil (wet stacking) I have load tested generator diesels that havent seen a load in years, these generators start and run no load at 1800 rpm's and the stuff that comes out of the exhaust once under full load is unbelievable. It sometimes takes an hour under full load to clean out the exh. Usually we run em under full load for 4 hours.
Did they stop putting catalytic converters on the new diesels when I wasn't looking.
When you let a diesel idle below operating temp where do you think the oil goes? and Where do you think the unburned fuel goes?
Why does Ford sell an AIC (Auxiliary Idle Control) for their 99-04PSD? And does the Stationary Elevated Idle Control (SEIC) on the 05/06 give you any clue as to what Ford Engineers think of long low idle speeds?
