Hey everyone,
I'm about to convert my 79 Ranchero from a column shift to a floor shift. I recently bought a B&M Hammer Shifter, a TCI Streetfighter C4 tranny, and the bracket kits for the shifter and the shift lever for the tranny. As far as converting, what will i have to do the the steering column to make this work? I'm basically trying to see if i can use it or if i have to get a different steering column. Someone was telling me that I could find a way to keep the lever in Neutral so it won't affect starting the car. The B&M is a ratchet shifter with the reverse lockout and neutral safety switch. If anyone has done this conversion or if anyone knows how to, i would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you very much!
Danny
DRanchero: I have "done" the change you asking about in a 72 R500 but its not 100% complete. I removed the whole steering column and replaced it with a one which came from a 74 Tbird. The neutral-start-back-up-light-switch [n-s-b-u-l-s] was on the bottom of the column shifter and a new one is on the floor shifter. The wiring from the old n-s-b-u-l-s was routed under the carpet to the new location. The wiring harness has molded four-prong plugs on each end which came from a salvage yard; the new wire harness was spliced near the where the old n-s-b-u-l-s was located. It would be a great help to be very familiar with the wiring diagram for your machine. the glitch with my machine is a jumper wire under the dash which is there from the factory and this jumper allows a start with the shifter in any position. I need to cut the jumper next time I'm under the dash.
DRanchero, I know a person that has done it on a couple of Rancheros he's Dan the Rancheroman. You can reach him through Rancheros US or post your question on their forum
So the jumper-wire-that-is-not-supposed-to-be-there has been cut and now the machine wont start. It gets worse: the wiring diagram shows that two red w/blue stripe wires go from the neutral start switch to the starter solenoid but my machine has two wires of a different color and neither of these two wires are shown as part of the start circuit. Where do we go from here??
