Need Advise

I have to replace my engine in a 1999 Expedition, 4.6L v8. I intend to buy a used engine. A friend told me that I can get a 1997 4.6 cheaper and that it is the same as the 1999 engine. Is that true? Please advise

Thanks,
Robin

They should all be the same price. Be sure to get your VIN Code when you go to the parts store. There are several different engines.

Thanks Tim. Do you know how long it usually takes to get a reply? Also, I tried to use the "live chat" but there doesn't seem to be anyone there. Do you know the best time to find people online?

Need advise on 1999 Expedition

Hello Mattsbox99,

You say that the 1997 and 1999 should be the same price, does that mean that either one will work in my 1999 expedition?

I was told that the mechanic has to take the broken engine out to determine whether I have 6 or 8 bolts on my flywheel.

I really don't know that much about engine/truck repairs. The truck is my only vehicle so I need to get the work done right away and with the cost of the engine and the labor I can't afford to make the wrong decision.

I would appreciate any further advise you can offer.

Thanks,
Robin

Ford used the same basic design from 1997 to 1999. Cylinder head design changed for the 2000 model year and remained the same until last year. Last year it went to 3 valves instead of two.

They should be the same price for both engines, but you'll need to check, I wasn't able to do so at work today, but I will tomorrow.

Stick with a 99 model. Those 97 models were not all that high on hp's, so if you've got to pay the same price, go for more power.

I would not buy a pre 99 4.6. The head and intake manifold design was changed for 99, and the result was more power and better mileage.
