So I've ran several searches and have come up with about 1.5 hours worth of VERY good threads but none that answer this question.
How the heck do you remove the ignition switch?? I'm tearing down this '66 and have all the wiring from the dash out and complete except for the freak'n ignition switch. Rather than get frustrated and just start cutt'n stuff I figured I'd give the experts a shot.
Hi Darren, seperating the harness from the switch is pretty easy....easier if the other switches and dash cluster is out....there is a pole about 3/4" long coming straight out of the rear of it...2 or 3 wires are on this sandwiched by nuts/washers....I believe nuts are 3/8. There is usually a nut holding the rubber plug into switch itself....the last one is kinda tough at times as it buries itself into the rubber making getting a socket or wrench on it hard. Once all of the nuts are off the plug pulls straight off....but its a hard pull....rock it from side to side ...it will come just takes a bit of finese...
As far as the switch itself, if you have the key, put it in turn to accy position an put a paperclip into tiny hole which pushes a button inside. with button pushed in turn the key to the extreme right and the tumbler and key will come out as one.
then to remove switch itself, shove in and twist and it will pop out as its got a spring keeping tension on it. If you need more help on things, give me a holler Darren....
Next question. How the heck do you get the freak'n light switch out?? I've loosened the switch but can't get the actual handle loose from the switch and there fore can't remove it from the dash. (Hope this makes sense!)
Darren-there is a button, near the dash on the switch side that you push in and then pull the rod/handle out. It has a groove on the end that holds it in place. The button is at 90* to the rod on the ignition switch itself. They are often on the top of the switch.
Hmmm.....Tried the whole paper clip thing. Seems like there's something stuck in the hole. Should I just drill the tumbler out? I'm guessing that the tumbler is what holds the trim ring on, right? 'Cause when I turn the ring, the whole switch assembly turns too.

No neal. Don't drill it!!
Let me clarify what CS65 said and add in what I did.
(You almost need 3 hands for this.)
Hold the switch assm completely still, from the back of the dash.
Insert key
Turn to ACC (accessories)
Insert paper clip (perhaps a big one as it may be hard to push)
The "button" inside should give a little (maybe 2mm)
While the "button" is depressed turn key and paper clip to the right.
Pull slightly on key
The entire thing should come right out. I don't know what all makes up that assembly but I can imagine a VERY difficult repair if you were to try and drill it out.
HOWEVER, if you do and need the assembly and wiring harness I have one on ebay right now. <rim shot>. Sorry, couldn't help the shameless plug!! LOL
Interesting, Didn't know it would work to the right as I was told to turn them to the left. The key needs to be horozontal to pull the cylinder out. I do know that.
Is the cylinder what holds the trim ring on, though? I mean, do I have to have that key cylinder out to get the switch out of the dash? Because if not, then I can just replace the whole switch and tumbler at once.
Ok, so I guess the neutral safety switch works fine in my truck. Next time before I try to remove my ignition switch I'll be sure the gear lever is all the way in park. Thanks for all the help though.
