2.9 idle problem

my 86 ranger when started revs to like 3000rpms and stays there wont kick down. I swaped out the iac for one that i knew worked in my B2. still doese it. it just started to do this when it got below 30deg out.but now doese it all the time. any thoughts to what other sensor it could be ?? coolant temp, iat,? any help would be great.
Thanks Jon

i bet that it is either still the iac or possibly the throotle position sensor....when mine did this i took off the iac and sprayed some carb cleaner in it and then blew it out with air....but do this.....take off the iac electrical connector, and then start the truck.it should barely idle and then possibly stall....if it still revs, then its probably the tps.....the tps is located on the side of the throttle body....hope this helps...i have an 86 2.9 too...its my baby!

Welcome to FTE!!!

Have you pulled code(s)? Do this before throwing money at parts; diagnosis is cheaper than guessing .

hi all first ime posting in ranger forum

first thing is first pull codes if you don't know how to do that check out ke00's tech article on pulling codes.

if you wondering what to do without pulling codes then move to the cooling system flush the radiator, check the thermostat,ECT sensor, also check you IAC VALVE if it's new the opening to the upper intake might be clogged or dirty clean with carb cleaner or equal remember to disconnect wiring , another thing would be to check wiring on IAC and make sure you don't have a break somewhere, it doesn't sound like TPS problem. sounds more like a ignition problem/cooling problem
also check yout timing you might have it retarded, check you throttle cable use some wd-40 and wet down the cable assembly uderneath the snow/ice cover. make sure you have vac lines working in order.

to avoid doing all this pull codes also avoid wasting money and precious time.

just my 2 cents Monty06
