Very true about the WD-40. I won't use it on anything of value. It will stop squeeks temporarily but that is it. It is deffinately not for guns. It is also true that guns do not need to be cleaned very often. The only time you need to clean them is when there is dust and other built up debris in the barrel or in the magizine well or in the action. I clean mine with the gun scrubber so I do not wear the barrel. I will occaionally run a snake through it but only maybe once a year. I have to depend on mine for my life as I am a police officer and it better be accurate. Debris does get built up in mine depending on where I am and what I have been doing. Gotta love those open bottem holsters!
psu1xj- never thought of even checking the brake cleaner ... I will have to compare the active ingrediants on that one .... the Gun Scrubber is about $3.00 to $3.50 a can. Why not use the cheaper version of I can. Thanks for the info.

A couple of other hints I use: After dissasembling gun down to metal in one pile and wood/plastic in the other I use good quality cleaners and then run the metal parts under the hot water faucet to get them rinsed off. Also, as the metal cools, it will completely dry out before lubing. In my Army days, we used to sneak our M-16's into the showers to clean them. Always store guns barrel down, so excess oils wont run into wood stocks and make them swell or stain. With the barrel fouling issue: you wont notice too much til you get into higher velocity cartridges. Then you need to get it out with a copper solvent. Besides loss of accuracy, it can hold moisture.
