Shepherd Rifle Scopes

Would anyone know of a reason not to use a Shepherd 310 P-1 scope on a .22LR for use to 100 yds or less. I bought this for a .243 shooting 100-550 yds, but unable to use that rifle due to medical issues. I hate to give this up if it is suitable for my Kimber Cascade, which shoots under 2" @ 200 yds with a Leupold 4x RM scope. It looks like it will fit with the mounts I now have on the Kimber. I was not concerned with the BDC or 18" ranging circle. Only issue might be the parallax adjustment built into the scope. Appreciate any advice.

I know nothing about the scope, other than what I just found out with a 'Goo' search.

Nice scope!

I do believe that the Shepherd 310 P-1 scope would be 'overkill'. It appears to have more bells and whistles than what you would actually use, but, it's your call.

Yep, I agree... a bit of overkill. Since I've owned it for some time already, I would take more of a loss than its worth to resell, and if I ever figured out my medical issue and could shoot a centerfire again, it is the best scope I've ever used. Check out the Shepherd web site. When I did a lot of varmint hunting 20 yrs ago, I only used a Leupold 12x for 100-600 yds, and a Leupold M-8 4xRF for the 22. I sold all that gear except my Kimber Cascade 22 which was $1k around 1980. I bought another .243 a couple of years ago, ended up talking to Mr. Shepherd, and bought the P-1. I talked to his wife last night, and she said it is a great scope for the 22. They did recommend I exchange it (at no cost) for the 22LR model (the 9" ranging circle and BDC would have been nice), but this is more versatile, should I use it for something bigger, later. For most, it is just way too expensive. I have severe muscle/nerve/joint pain, and can only shoot a rimfire at the moment. Will be looking for new mounts this weekend. The parralax concern is taken care of by the adjustable objective.

I understand what you are saying.

I messed up my back in 1991, and had to give up shooting my M1 Garand in High Power Matches. (Actually, I had to give up shooting for almost 3 years.)
I have since bought an AR-HBAR for competition. (Read NO recoil!!!)

With that said, I did quite well with the little 'mouse' gun. Then, I broke my neck. (At C6-C7 vertabrae.) I haven't been able to shoot anything (except handguns) for almost 5 years. (Because of what was done to correct the problem. . . .surgery.) I still can't get a good 'spot-weld', nor can I get prone and sight the rifle.
Because of that, I don't compete, any longer.

I've got several firearms that I have been unable to shoot, but. . . they are going nowhere!!!

With that said, a good friend let me shoot his Remington 700 BDL in .30-'06 that had a 'KDF' muzzle brake on it.
This '06 recoiled like a .223!!!! In other words. . . recoil was non-existent!
I have also discovered 'Limbsaver' recoil pads. According to articles that I've read, recoil is reduced from 40 to 60% with these.
(One of these will be on one of my Marlin .45-70 rifles, real soon!)

So, if you put a 'KDF' and a 'Limbsaver' on a .243, it should feel like a .22 lr!!!

Get well soon.

I tried the Limbsaver slip-on with the .243. Still could not use it. Cabela's had one from another company that worked twice as good (very large, soft rubber compound), but I had exchanged it when I bought the LS (their advertising convinced me why it would work better than what I had), and I have not seen one in the store since. I also have very weak muscles (very likely I have MS from what I do know, my sister has it as well), and once I started getting hit in the nose with the scope, that was it for me. I thought about the Lead-sled, but too much stuff to carry around. Its painful just to move my shooting arm or try to lay down, so..... its a big problem. I had back surgery in 87 and severe whiplash from a MVA, then a 6.5 hr cancer surgery on my neck in 99, mercury poisoning, and was left with a very painful nerve/muscle/joint pain I can barely deal with. I finally agreed to an MRI with Magnevist last month (part of which was to do a brain scan for the MS, but I was not able to stay on my back any longer), and it made all my problems five times worse than before the test..... and they said there were no adverse side affects! I used to compete in the 80's myself. I started by selling off the .308, my 1980 Colt Python went two weeks ago and I only have the .243 which may go next month, a Bushmaster AR Super V-match, and my 25 yr old Kimber Cascade. My comp 22 target pistol and Rem 1100 are going this weekend. So, I will be looking for a mount to install the Shepherd on Saturday, see how that goes. I will have to look into that KDF. My brother has a Ruger UL 06, which he shoots two shots every other year, and kicks like an angry mule. I am just about ready to buy my one way ticket..... so playin' with the toys gets me from one week to the next. Got a loaded TRP .45 a couple years ago, haven't shot more than a box through it. To add insult to injury, the range is only two miles from my house.......

As my dad used to say, "Old too soon, smart too late!"

Sorry to hear about that.

I wish that I had known that you had a Python for sale. I still kick myself in the **** for not buying one in '78.
My first wife said (at the time) that she didn't care which .357 that I bought. I had one in my hand.
As for the 1100. . . I've got two. I recently acquired one for $100. It's prevous owner is building a drag car and needed the $$$. He set the price. When he told me that, the money was in his hand before he could finish the sentence!

As for the 'one way ticket'. . . that's baloney. Take it from me. When I broke my neck, I was in so much pain, I prayed to die. Literally.
The pain was unbearable. I couldn't even eat. I couldn't lift my right arm to my face. I had to sit with my neck bent and my chin almost touching my chest, to allow me to take pressure off of the nerves from the disk pressing on them.
When I had the MRI done, they had to put me under general anesthesia, so that I could lay down for more than 2 minutes. (I swear that is gospel!) That bill alone was over 10 G's!
I found two really great doctors. The pain is gone. I thank God every day for letting me find these doctors. They (literally) gave me my life back.
One doctor was from Bethesda Naval Hospital, the other from Georgetown University Hospital (He's the Chief of Neurosurgery).

I've got 2-1/2 lbs. of titanium in my lower back (from that injury) and I have 1-1/2 lbs. of titanium in my neck (from that surgery). The only side-effect from the neck injury (other than the expected loss of some mobility) is that the end of my right index finger is still numb. Hey, if that is the only side-effect, I can live with that!
And yes, I set off metal detectors at airports!!! (Everyone always asks!)
I love having fun with the TSA folks.
"Sir, empty your pockets."
"Sir, pull your shirt out and raise your arms, parallel with the ground."
"Sir, have you undergone surgery?"

That's when I smack my forehead with the palm of my hand and say, "Doh! What am I thinking? Yes, I've had surgery, and I'm sportin' a lot of metal in my back and neck. Do you want me to get the x-rays outta my carry-on?"

Back to the subject at hand. . .
Forget about the one way ticket.

Look into the KDF. I think you'll be truly surprised with it.
Lastly. . . get a 'Bulls Bag.' You don't need a lead sled with this.
Mine fits into a 5 gal. bucket, easily. It holds the rifle/shotgun solidly and doesn't weigh much, at all.

As for the centerfire rifle. . . look at the Remington Mdl 7 in .223! Tack driver and no recoil. (Hey. . . it'll get you back down to the range!!!)

You'll get through this. The best way around a problem is right through the middle of it!

As for the Shepard scope......

when sighting in, after each adjustment, you might take a screwdriver with a plastic fluted handle and twirl the handle against the adjustment turrents. Some scopes use the recoil to "set" the new setting and a 22 is so light on recoil, the adjustment may not move to the new setting. I have had that problem mounting a centerfire rifle scope on my 22s so a little "vibration" did the trick.........chris3

Keith, I gotta say I really needed your inspiration today. It has been a very tough last 6 weeks, and I have been through an aweful lot the past 15 years. BTW, the Python is/was still at the shop on consignment. He stated he thought he had a buyer yesterday, but I have not heard. I bought it March 1981, 8" nickle, used one summer for groundhogs, mint condition and cylinder air/gap was done special by Colt, been in my cabinet unused since. It was just gorgeous!

There are about 5 boxes of very hot handloads, a Hidden Thunder Leather, fully lined shoulder holster, speed loaders and some other stuff, and it shoots 4" open sights @ 100 yds. I kept it for so long, just because it looked so damn nice. I was going to give it to my best friend this year, who also got my comp 70 .45 Gold Cup, but he didn't want it....hes not doing too well either.

I just called the gun shop, they sold the Python just a few hours ago and was being packed for shipping. They sold it for $950, and no accessories. So, they are still there if you know anyone interested.

Now what gets me, I offered the Python to another guy a month ago, who said he really wanted one, with all the accs for $950, no tax... and he said it was way too much. I went to the biggest dealer in the area who said it was worth $1100 with all the stuff....

Anyway, time to move on...... try to deal with what I have.

chris3,

Interestingly, Shepherd has taken care of that. I pasted their explanation from the windage adjustment page on their site:

FIGURE 3 IS THE SHEPHERD THAT HAS BEEN ZEROED IN. FIGURE 4 IF THE SAME SCOPE AFTER IT WAS ADJUSTED THREE MINUTES TO THE RIGHT TO COMPENSATE FOR WIND. BY A SIMPLE LOOK THROUGH THE SHEPHERD SCOPE (WITHOUT ANY NEED FOR A TEST FIRE, TO BANG ON THE SCOPE, OR WORRY) YOU KNOW THAT YOUR ADJUSTMENT "TOOK". NOW YOU CAN FOCUS ON THE TRUE TASK AT HAND WHICH IS MAKING A GOOD SHOT.

THANKS TO OUR PATENTED DUAL-RETICLE SYSTEM THIS IS JUST ONE OF THE FEATURES YOU GET ONLY WITH A SHEPHERD.

Its been a very long time since I had this scope out, and wondered why the reticle was not lined up perfectly... here, I had adjusted for windage last time I was out, and forgot how the scope worked. Really an awesome piece of work! I traded a SWAT model Leupold to get this some years ago through Cabela's (at no extra charge), and I've been very pleased with it.
