Im about rebuild my 302 from my 82 f-100...im thinking about getting a little extra hp, and mpg with roller lifters. What do they usually price around? and if anyones had any experiences with putting in roller lifters...how much of a difference did they make? thanks.
p.s: what are some other cheap, but effective ways to raise my mpg...or my hp without hurting my gas mileage?
If I were you, I would get some used GT-40 heads that are in good condition, consider a mild cam swap such as Comp Cams High Energy number 31-215-2 or Comp Cams Dual Energy number 31-416-3 (www.compcams.com) roller rockers, reduced friction bearings, 500 cfm 4 bbl carburetor, headers, an aftermarket ignition like a Jacobs Mileagemaster ignition. That is what I would do. You may even score some roller rocker's at a salvage yard.
Used roller lifters are on eBay all the time. As long as they're in good shape, there's nothing wrong with using such used parts. Not true though with used standard lifters.
new roller lifters are 129 to 169 dollars I have Crane rollers now but prefer Ford! If you are going roller dont forget the roller block, lifter holdowns ( eight) and retainer! and distributor gear ( steel) to match the roller cam! The factory stock 5.0 Mustang cam is a great choice in a truck! smooth idle and power to 5400rpm! If this cam or any aftermarket 5.0 roller is used it maybe a 351w firing order! the 5.0 HO cam is! I hope I didnt forget anything! If this was my choice I would stay with the original block setup use a RV cam low to mid range power and the GT 40 heads as mentioned earlier!or Mustang 87 to 95 e7s with a little port work! My 87 5.0 went 13.21 @ 105 with the e7 heads and stock cam! You have several good choices here with your truck setup good luck!
