Its not the same principle as roller lifters. Sometimes called a true roller its a type of timing chain thats somewhat stronger and better than the stock timing gears and chain. IMO yes they are worth the cost.

whats so much better than the stock chain? Are they worth putting in if your motor is pretty much stock? or are they just for hopped up engines?...thnks again

Most stock sets have nylon on the tips on the gears which tend to wear faster and the chain itself is not as strong I guess it's a matter of preference, Personally when i have to change timing chains i will use it over a stock set and cost wise it's not that much more money.

I am by no means anywhere close to an expert, in fact EXTREMELY far from it, but we just rebuilt the bottom half of my '86 351W HO with 115,000 miles on it - the crankshaft was worn badly. The roller timing chain and gears looked brand new.

Less wear, less stretch, less power robbing friction.

They really aren't that much more expensive. I tried two stock setups from cloyes and someone else and I struggled to get everything lined up and they never seemed to fit right (I gave it about 3 hours worth). I took'em back and for 30 more dollars got the edelbrock true roller and it installed within minutes. 30 bucks is pretty cheap for "piece of mind."

so the only difference is that roller timing gears are sold metal, while the stock ones have the nylon or whatever on them? i took one of the stock ones out of a lincoln a while ago and it was trashed

No the main difference is in the roller chain itself. You can buy solid replacement gears for stock type chains. Its the chain that's stronger and stretchs less with less wear and less friction.

Timing gears are very noisey compared to a timing chain.
