Clean out cooling system

I was wondering if anyone tried this or thinks it wouldn't work, putting CLR or similar calcium and rust remover and water through your engine, I don't see how it would do any damage, but thought I would throw it out here before I try it on my own stuff. I assume if I put it in and let the motor run for a while and let the stuff flow through it would clean out any partially blocked passages before it gets blocked. I don't think the stuff is potent enough to eat through the hosses.

system cleaners

Or just buy a jug of cooling system cleaner and follow directions. If you have passages plugged solid, I dont think it will eat through them. Maybe the only chance would be to run the motor til warm, then let it sit for a few days and then flush it with a hose "T" and garden hose. dont know how effective CLR would be after thinning it with 2 gal's of water. Although it works great on my faucets and fixtures in the bathroom.

Thanks baitmaster for replying, I used those actual cleaners before and unless you know of better quality ones then I do, and U probobly do because I grab the cheapest one I can find, but I figure I am gonna try the CLR thing, even if it eats the hoses they are cheap to replace and most need replacing anyway.

worth a try

I dont think the CLR will hurt anything thats made out of rubber, but watch the paint. I once knew a guy that kept some vinegar in his system, I know its good at cleaning calcium off glass, but dont know about cooling systems. Let us know how it turns out.

I have used detergent for my wifes dish washer and it does seem to do a good job. What i did was to put in about half of a cup bring my truck up to temp by driving around the block a few times then I allowed it to sit a few days then I drained the coolant system and I repeted this several times until the water would run clear then I put in new coolant and everything was fine. Thats just my experience . Jeff
