4x4 low clunk

It has just snowed and iced here in mid- tenn, I have had to use my 4-wheel high a bit and my 4-low to pull some people out of bad spots. when I put my truck (04 f-250 v-10 w/8" lift & 38's) in 4-low and go in reverse it seems to slip a bit then make a HUGE clunking metallic sound then hook up. The sound is very loud and scares the hell out of my wallet.This is the first 4x4 with the auto hubs I have had and I dont know if this is normal or if Im doing something wrong, any help will be greatly appreciated. Does the 4lo light come on before you go in reverse??

yes, you can hear it actuate after the hubs and it seems to be fine in drive but then in r is will act like only 2wd for a few seconds then clunk! and it starts to pull fine.

Could be the normal way it operates. I would have to see if mine does it, I would suggest putting it in reverse, wait a few seconds then light throttle use till you feel it pulling.

This also happened; had it in 4lo stopped at inlaws for dinner,left it in 4lo,came out got in truck and it acted like 2wd until I turned the 4wd **** with the truck in n. Is this auto hub stuff just realy sensitive, or mabye a probv with the truck.
