whine at idle

whine at idle
when i start my truck i get a moan/whione from the front end. i think it's coming from the alt, but not sure. when i drive around it goes away until i hit a stop light. any guesses? does an alt whine when it is getting bad?

I too was hearing this sound on my just sold '99 F350 PSD. Being that it is winter & very cold here lately, in the low teens, I thought it sounded like it was coming from the power steering pump. Once the Truck warms up & is driven a bit, the sound disappears.

If the sound changes when you turn the steering wheel while standing still, it is your power steering pump. If your alternator bearings were going, I would expect a sqealing and/or rumbling sound. ...my 2 cents...Phil
