The other day, I saw an Expy with stock-sized H-rated tires (265/70R17) on the stock rims. The suspension also looked stock. I got to thinking about this and am merely looking for input. Has anyone put the higher speed rated tires on an Expy? I know through experience how different rating tires can affect handling on a passenger car, but was wondering how they work on the heavier Expeditions over the standard S-rated donuts. Merely curious......
I am not aware that the speed rating of a tire has any direct correlation to it's handling. The speed rating is a determination at what speed a tire will not exhibit tread "squirm" a low speed rated tire may handle much better than a higher one. However, those interested in high speed ratings are usually loking for good (high traction) lateral grip there fore there may be coincedental association between rating and grip.
For something like the expy high absolute grip may not be as desirable as smooth transition to breakaway. 6000lbs is a lot of inertia to have slide unexpectedly. I just put F-stone destination A/T for the winter and feel that they handle better than the summer conti-tracs.
But thats just my opinion,

I drive a Crown Vic PI during the week for work, and it has the V-rated Eagle RS-A tires (up to 149mph). Handles and corners like a dream. But, the police-rated snows went on last week, which are only T-rated, I think. Those turns & corners the car used to take without batting an eye now require careful input, as the tail end wants to let go. I'm not looking to up the cornering abilities of my Expy at all. I think it handles just fine with what I have on now. Just saw the H-rated units on this particular Expy & thought to myself "why". Thanks for the reply.

You're comparing snow tires to summer performance tires? Snow tires are made with different rubber compounds to grip in the snow with extra siping for more edges. Those will certainly make a tire looser, let me know how they compare when taking the same turn in 6" of snow.
