Have put on new water pump, four different range thermostats, and new radiator cap on my 95 Ford Explorer 4.0 V6 and the thermostat still opens and closes every 20 seconds; it stays half way of gauge for 20 seconds and goes to 1/4 for 20 seconds, what is the problem? Will it damage anything to fluctuate?
I think this is a common problem with the 4.0 and 3.0 engines. My 3.0 Aerostar van does the same thing, and has for years.
If you will look where the temp. sender is, you will see it is just in front of the thermostat. If the gauge or sensor gets a little out of wack from age, then the guage will move each time the thermostat opens and closes.
Around town my gauge will move up and down constantly. Once out on the road it will stay somewhat steady.
Look in the Aerostar forums, and you will see this mentioned a lot.
