Fluctuating temp gauge

Hey guys, I got a 96 4x4 with the 5.8. I just installed new water pump. I've always had small temp fluctuation on the gauge. When warm the needle would go from the n to the r on normal. Now after new pump it goes from o all the way to l on guage and back and forth. Scares me when it goes to the extreme right of normal range. What causes this? should i be concerned? Thermostat problem?

^^ditto. Thermostat is sticking. Or you have a big air pocket in the cooling system when you refilled it. Run it with the cap off and get it warm to see if it's up and flowing.
