Can someone recommend some free pc tuneup software. I keep having some small problems and need to see if I can get them fixed.
Some of my problems include, when I have a screen saver on then I try to use the pc it makes me login, virtual memory to low, four or five times a day it disconects my internet connection(dsl).
I use avg free and adaware but these do not seem to be helping. I am running xp.
The Screen saver issue can be fixed by going to the 'Screen Saver' settings. I'm not sure how XP works since I still use 98SE, but it could be under 'Display Properties'.
The Virtual Memory issue: according to Miscrosofts site, this is how you change it.
How to change the size of the virtual memory paging file
You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.
1. Click Start, click Run, and then type sysdm.cpl in the Open box.
2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Performance.
3. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Change under Virtual memory.
4. Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change.
5. Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size, type a new paging file size in megabytes (MB) in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, and then click Set.
This shortage of memory could be well associated with the lossy connection of your DSL. How much RAM do you have?
EDIT: Get to Screen Saver Settings.
In XP:
Start > Control Panel
Appearance and Themes > Display.

First, go here and scan your computer. Trend Micro
Then:
In control panel/ power options under the Power Schemes tab see if 'system standby' is enabled or if it is at 'Never', and under the Hibernate tab see if 'Enable Hibernation' is checked and try unchecking it if it is. It's possible that your system is not recovering from hibernation properly if it is indeed enabled.
I wouldn't mess with the swap file, let windows manage that, it probably knows best.
I'll run Win98 on here untill absolutely nothing supports it anymore. Easy to work with, never gives me problems, does everything I need it to, and all third party programs that give people with XP problems work perfectly on it.
XP has a nice little feature called compatibility mode that you can set a program to run in. It basically "tricks" the app into thinking that it is running on whatever version of windows you select. I have never had a problem with software not running on my XP machines, because of compatibility mode.
You also might be running too many applications which cause too much memory to be used. You might try shutting some of them down. If you have 128mb, I would recommend to upgrade to 256 at least.
LINUX is THE BEST OS. I will not stand down from that statement. The problem is that you really need to know what you're doing to make it work properly. There are a few versions/distros that are geared for the not so techno-minded.
I adjusted the virtual memory many times with no luck. I have 512 of ram. I turned off the screensaver so that stops the login problem.
Mil1ion What is housekeeper? Also how do I get the mouse wheel to work with firefox?
Lets not get into big pathectic argument over which operating system is better. All of them have their good points, and all of them have their bad points. Let's just accept them as they are.
Another thing to try is go START - RUN type in msconfig - at the box that comes up go to the startup tab and see what is loading when you turn on your machine, if alot of programs are running in the background they will use alot of your machines processing power, uncheck anything you dont want to run and reboot. If you uncheck something you shouldnt just reboot into safemode and check it. I have found it is safe to uncheck just about everything.
