rear main "how hard"

I have a 79 f150 400cid leaking oil from the rear main. How hard would it be to replace it. I am mechanically inclined so I am not afraid to do it. Also any other advice regarding it would be great! thanks guys

My first advice would be to make absolutely sure it's leaking from the rear main. Valve covers, intake manifold and the ever popular oil pressure sending unit all end up looking like they're a rear main.

The sending unit is on the top back of the block right behind the intake manifold. They're notorious for leaking and then dripping down the back of the motor and looking like a rear main.

if you decide to replace the rear main seal. jack up the truck and support the frame.that will let the front axle to hang down father. therefore getting you some more clearance. you want it high enough that the tires do not touch the ground.the oil pan will come off .also the oil pump does not need to be disturbed. unless you wanted too replace it.
