Rear Main 01 Excursion

I have a bad rear main on my Excursion. It's the 7.3L powerstroke turbo deisel. How hard is it to replace it? Should I just take it to the dealer to have it done professionally?

Mine has been leaking (slight but annoying) since I bought the truck in April of last year. I'd be interested in the effort behind this repair as well as the potential cost if you take it to a "delaer".

Is your truck still under warranty?

How do you know for sure? Check the entire valley and rear of heads for leaks before you start chasing the rear main seal. Very common to have topside or rear leaks run down. Do some research in the 7.3l section.

I have had the truck looked over by three different mechanics including myself to be sure of the problem. My question is... is it something that can be done at home because i do not have the equipment to drop that big of a transmission. Does anyone know what it will cost to have it done at the dealer?

I've replace the rear main on all our trucks when I do a clutch job. Easy if you ask me and if you have the trans off already. lol

After the trans is down you just pull the flywheel, dig the old seal out, smash new seal in, done.

All I can say is be sure it's the seal before you tear into it. It will cost you a ton to have a dealer swap the seal. I've replaced my transmission input seal on mine. Seems like I remember somebody else paying the dealer ~$1200 for the job and I paid $12 for the seal but spent 12 hours doing it myself. I used my mc/atv jack like this one to pull the trans and xfer case as one unit. Sears: Online department store featuring appliances, tools, fitness equipment and more

The rear main seal is easy to replace but the tranny has to come out to do it. If you don't have a transmission jack or a good motorcycle/atv jack it's difficult to drop the tranny safely. I have done it with a regular floor jack but you need AT LEAST two people to wrestle it around on the small jack and get it lined back up. I don't really suggest doing it on a tranny/motorcycle/atv jack without a second person either.
