i acquired a 1984 F250 with a factory 351 HO under the hood. just wondering if this engine is rare as i can't recall seeing one before? it has a holley 4 BBL and is bone stock with all the smog still running on it. is this worth hanging on to or is it just an 80's gas guzzler? thanks
GREAT motor....Wouldn't say rare though, we've got 2 at the shop, both in 80's pickups, we blocked the emissions on both and the motors are screamers, they love to run! We use one for hauling, have had 2 1/2 tons of gravel in the bed(yes 2 1/2 tons) along with another 6 tons on a trailer. Pulled it right along. Not quick by any means in that situation, but what motor is? lol. Does anyone know what makes these motors "HiPo"? Or this just a marketing scheme? The one in the hauler runs like it has little bit of compression to it, but it is stock so we don't really know and we've never taking a compression tester to it. Any help on this would be great! Sorry didn't mean to hijack there, but would appreciate the help any how.

yeah i'm gonna gut the emissions on this one and i think it will run better. it seems the converter is plugged up and it certainly don't need the air pump!!! it just shocked me when i raised the hood and seen the aluminum air cleaner lid with the HO on it. didn't know they made such an engine or put it in a pickup. anybody know any horsepower ratings for this engine?
What make it an H.O. is that it has a 4bbl carburetor. That was the only difference. I am pretty sure, but not positive as to the horsepower rating, but I believe it may be 210 hp.
i was hoping it might have a little more duration on the cam or something besides the carb. oh well, i guess the 4 bbl will at least give a little better gas mileage.....
The 351w 4V HO has the 4 barrel carb AND has a RV cam
Yep that is it, otherwise it's a low compression smog motor same as everything else from that era. That said the stock exhaust system is brutally restrictive and if the original cat is still present it is long overdue for replacement.
. '78 may have the wimpy 351M with 2 bbl. carb... or wimpy 400... my '78 F150 351M has an Emissions Exempt sticker on the engine (no EGR, air injection, or cats)... don't know about the vans... look in 335-series engines forum here for how to easily, inexpensively bump power way up on those...
