I decided to get two partly based on their description. When I got the package the instructions say to only use one...and to put it on the left side (from front) in the rear freeze plug. I'm wondering if I can use the 2nd block heater, or if I should just use the 1. I'd like to use the 2nd one if it's phyisically possible, but according to the directions its not so I'm trying to find out if the instructions are accurate (sometimes they're wrong). I used a block heater on my 302 and it worked well, but it didn't heat up like I'd like it to. It's probably not necessary to have two, but I'm just wondering if I am able to. Anyone know?
One will do fine. That's all we have up here in canada and it heats up a vehicle at -35'C just fine. A battery heater is better than a block heater. I doesn't matter if you engine block is warm if your battery doesn't have enough power to start the engine.
I'm basically going to plug it in on a timer, and set the timer to go off an hour before I wake up so when i go to start the truck it'll be warm. I have forged pistons in the motor so I want to reduce cold starting. It averages about 20 degrees around here, I've seen as low as -40 when I was in Maine, but when I had it plugged in it started up just fine (that was on the 302).
