Passenger Fresh Air Vent

I was picking thru a '64 parts truck and brought home the passenger side air vent cable and vent assembly that I'd like to swap on my '62. Mine has an accordion lookin' thing between the air vent and heater box, and a lever that opens a door for air flow in the cab. The '64 didn't have the accordion, and was missing what I suppose was a plate to block the side of the heater box. So I'm wondering if it's a fairly easy swap, assuming I can find or fabricate the missing plate on my heater box. I mean should it be as easy as it looks?

It sounds like your truck has a fresh air heater, drawing fresh air in when the door is opened. The '64 has a recirc heater. My '64 is the same and my '66 has a fresh air type.

1961/63 F100/1100's were available with a recirculating heater.

1964 F100/1100's were available with a fresh air and recirculating heater.

Could someone explain to me the differences? If the fresh air type has outside air coming in, why does it need a fan motor? Unlesss your sitting still for along time..

You would have some very uneven air flow with out the fan. Only so much air is going to flow through it at high speed unless you put a scoop on the truck.

Ok, so swapping my fresh air vent for the '64's recirculating seems to involve mostly changing the air tube things at the kick panel and attaching the vent cable at the dash like I thought. Would it matter if I still kept the accordion attached to the heater box after the swap, or should I close it off? Seems that if the vent were closed it would still think it was a recirculating heater? Is there any advantage to either system? Or am I just nuts?

If you remove the bellows and close off the opening on the heater you won't have any heat in the truck. On my '66 I 've thought about putting a trap door in the bottom of the bellows so that it can work as a recirc heater when the main vent is closed.
Is there a reason you want to switch to a recirc heater?

To be honest, I just want a functioning cable to replace the chrome plug on the dash. I had no idea there are two types of heaters - news to me. I'm not even sure I can get the cable attached to the dash without removing the new glove box I've already installed. Removing the original one was an exercise in total futility. The donor truck's was already removed so I couldn't practice on that. Maybe I'll just leave well enough alone, at least it works. Appreciate pics, ND. Always something to learn here!
