i own an 89 f-150. been having fuel problems. it bucks, hesitates while driving. i replaced fuel pump, filter, plugs, wires, cap and rotor. it idles ok and starts fine. just when i drive it acts up. any suggestions would be appreciated
Welcome to FTE. Sounds like you need to check the fuel pressure to. Which fuel pump did you replace. Do you have two fuel tanks that work? I'm no expert but I would check for trouble codes to. See www.fordfuelinjection.com under getting trouble codes. Its easy and free. Also your Haynes manual has a ECC trouble codes section. Let us know if you get any codes.
Could be a number of things but checking the codes is a good idea,I too had a problem like this on an 89 f150 302 turned out it was the plenum gasget it was ripped and leaking air It would idle ok and start good but soon as I would start driving I would have the same symptoms as you, funny thing too the check engine lite never flashed at all good luck
could i have to much fuel pressure i changed fuel filter twice, the mechanic said it reads 48lbs. is that to much pressure, do i need to bleed the system
The fact that your Check Engine Light comes on indicates something has set a fault/trouble code with your truck's computer. Best way to proceed is to pull the codes, or have your mech pull/read them. That will isolate what is wrong, so you don't spend mucho bux throwing money at the problem without knowing which system is causing the fault.
(O) = Key On Engine Off test
(R) = Key On Engine Running test
(M) = Memory code
29 Vehicle Speed Sensor problem - VSS
33 ALL - (O, M) EGR did not open/ respond during test or if memory code, did not open intermittently - EVPEVRPFE 42 (R) System rich - Fuel control
(M) System was rich for 15 seconds or more (no HO2S switching) - Fuel control
Were these codes while engine was running? Or was after it was warm and not running? Which engine do you have? 35 to 45 psi for fuel pressure is ok with engine off, if it's not a 4.9. 42 psi is ok, 48psi is to much, with the engine not running, which one did you mean? Was this reading while running? Is that why you replace the fuel pump? Give us the other codes to. Start testing the sensors with the lowest code first. Don't just replace parts, ok. Does it run bad on both tanks?
