When you step on the brake do you hear a cliking sound? It makes a light cliking sound when you depress the brake and you should feel it in the handle as well. If it's not doing that then it sounds like a selenoid problem.
My windstar does this if I park on a hill and it rolls back after it is in park. I have to lean back an fourth real quick to get the van rocking, when it is forward it will come out of park. If I use the emergency brake before I let off of the brake, the van doesn't roll back so the problem doesn't occur. I usually don't use the emergnecy brake though becaus I like to look like an idiot rocking back and fourth in my van

I had to take the console cover off per book instructions and depress the manual override to get it out of park. I would rather fix this my self if it is an easy fix as I cannot really afford to take it to the dealer right now. Please advise.
My brake lights work, however, I have seen that this can still be a fuse or a blown stop lamp circuit when this happens?
