Hey dg1147, I've been down there a few times. If you are looking for beach driving head for padre island. It is about a 20 min drive from Corpus. The farther south you go on the island the less traveled the beach is. Lots of fun! I went with a friend who had a jeep, and we also took my 97 F-150 4x4.
Don't get caught in the dunes. Massive fines. The beach road between Port A and Mustang Island State Park use to be a 4x4 only road with lots of sand to play in. Been a long time since I've been down there though. goldendually
I lived there a few years ago and frequently went south towards Mustang island. If you take the ferry at Port Aransas (Aransas Pass), drive towards the beach and turn south. You'll see a sign that says 4x4 only and keep going. Also, there are some good trails off the main highway from Aransas Pass to Port Aransas. Just watch out for some of the dunes. There were signs posted when I went to stay off of them or receive a fine. When in doubt, ask someone at one of the bait shops. They always had good information for me. Also, if you drive east towards Ingleside, you will find some good trails.
When you cross the JFK causeway you'll be on Padre Island. Go south on the beach for about 20 mi or so and you'll come to the end of the improved and maintained beach. There are pilings driven in the sand and warning signs for 4 wheel drives only beyond that point. Take plenty of beer (the prefered payment meathod for being pulled out) if you don't have another truck with you. You'll see a few rusted truck carcasses at the surf line where someone thought they could drive into the water.
You might want to air your tires down to 20 PSI or so. Take a small compressor to air back up when you're back in town. Check that your spare is good before you go too.
It's great down there, no stores or anything. Take water, food, etc, at least a 30' tow strap, a small shovel and at least a 5 gal. can of gas, 10 gal. would be better. If you don't need it you're likely to run across someone else who does. All the crowds will be up in Corpus and Port A and you'll be having a blast in relative solitude down there.
