I've had my Dell a year now, and just as I suspected from the rip-off company, things start to act funny the day my "warranty" (which I politely refused to extend on more than 3 occassions) runs out.
Now, there's this "Dell Alert!" program on my computer. The icon will show up down by the clock from time to time, but since the 1 year ended, it pops up everytime I turn the computer on.
This is more of just an annoyance than anything. I want to get it off of my computer because I don't use the service. Is there any way of removing it without much hassle? Maybe someone here could tell me which parts to uninstall/remove. Is there a way to turn it off in the "msconfig" - "start up" menu? I can't seem to find anything that looks like it would be the right thing.
I have had a Dell for 3+ years now .. and never got that message. Must be I have a dinosaur already. Darn. If you can't find it, go to www.winxpnews.com and send them an email. Those folks are always telling how to do something inside XP. A great info source!

Ask if you need me to be more specific. Thanks.

Just right click the little ! icon by the clock and arrow down to "alert settings." Under the "General" tab, unclick the 1st choice (remind me when..."). Under update click on "ask me before..."
Then go to the "alerts" tab. Unclick everything you can on the "notify me of..." part, click on "no notification."
Under the "logs" tab, unclick whatever you feel is unnecessary.
After all that's done, restart the computer. Now you should still see the icon, but not any bothersome screens, etc.
FWIW, those reminders are for any updates Dell made for your machine. In the world of computer companies, it doesn't get any better than Dell.
Does it blink or is it stationary in the tray now ?
If it's stationary, try clicking on it or right clicking on it and click properties to see where it is. Reminders are usually turned on by the registry, or by the program itself.
You might have to call dell support, if there is any, and ask them.
Eh, That alert might have been for your own benefit. Many motherboard OEMs offer a free ROM upgrade to the motherboard within a 12 month period to make sure it conforms to any new specs or software releases. fwiw.
Usually you download the software, set some switches, upload the rom, remove the jumpers, and you have a free upgrade.
If I am not mistaken, that Dell Alert is Dell's own computer update service. It does basiclly the same thing as going to Windows update, but might include driver updates specific for your machine. Chances are if you hav been getting a bunch of messages, you have not allowed the updates to load.
If you are looking to delete this program, look in XP's control panel, under remove or add programs.
What I do with annoyances like that is press Ctrl+Alt+Del and select Task Manager. Make a note of all the programs or exe's that are running, then close the offending program, Watch Task manager to see which program closes, then, in Windows Explorer, do a search for that file name and delete it.
You can also go to this entry in the registry and delete the entry for the offending program: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
Make sure you know what you are doing if you mess around in the registry and make a backup first and don't let the cat near the keyboard while editing the registry.
Well my DELL is over 2 years old and I too refused the extended waranty. However I got no such warnings from my system and have upgraded most of it anyway. I really like my DELL and would not hesitate to buy another.
For whatever it's worth, XP usually has a lot of processes running all at once. I installed FreeRamXP Pro at download.com and have it set to try to free up to 80% of the RAM and I usually average 50% or better free. My machine runs well enough to keep me happy.

just a side note, XP likes memory, the more you have the better it runs. Microsoft wants a min. of 256m and recommends 512m. I tell everyone buying or building a computer w/XP to run 1 gig min. Another thing with freeing up processes, turn off automated services. anything from automated updates, checking email, hard drive monitoring for defragmenting, etc.
