Hey guys, been a lurker/scattered poster here for a while. I came across a chance to get a blower, intake tubes, and an oil line from a guy I ride sportbikes with for a really good price. What all peices would I need other than the aforementioned stuff to get the whole thing up and going. I have numerous good friends that work at dealearships so getting things like adapters and the like won't be a problem.
Do you have the mount?? Is it for your application??
I put one on my '96 F350 460/auto back in '97. What brand?? Vortech will need an oil line from back of block(off sending unit). It drains into passenger valve cover(this stuff is plain hose/fittings).
You'll need some fuel management stuff. There is a pressure regulator and an addition fuel pump you put inline down next to fliter(on frame).
Mine also came with MSD timing retard. Not mandatory, but useful if you plan on running it hard.
I spend a total of two days installing everything. One getting blower and such equipment mounted, the other getting passenger valve cover off to tap for return line. That was the worst of it. I loved it!
Check my galleries, I think I have a couple motor shot of installation.
It has all the mounting hardware that I will need. I was under the impression that the MSD ignition retard was mandatory? I have a friend with an MSD box that he is going to give me (if he can find it in his pile of junk haha) but it is just a regular MSD not the one that comes with the kit. It also has the oil line, so other than those I just need the fuel pump and the pressure regulator, right? I checked out your gallery too, it looks good under the hood
The MSD is a good thing, but you "could" run it without if you were careful. I had mine turned down to minimum most of the time with no problems. I usually ran mid to hi grade fuel. I used the truck to pull my 40ft race car trailer so it got a workout most weekends.
I never got the chance to put headers on it, but I did put a super turbo out back with a turndown. It had a nice grumble and with a hint of blower whine it kept anyone wondering. One time I took it to the track it ran 15.8's. That was right on the heels of a Lightning back then.
The worst part of the whole thing was back then you could not get a good shift controller for the E40d tranny. It shifted like an old lady and I could not get it to do any better. I think now you can do something about it, back in '97 it was too new to find anything.
I miss that truck!
I would get on Vortech site and see if they will send you the diagram/instructions/parts list. That will go a long way in helping you.
Yeah I looked on the Vortech site and got the .pdf file of instructions and everything. I was just wondering if I could go ahead and install it without the ign. box until I got the cash to get one. I have the ZF in my truck so if I can figure out a way to shift faster it should haul some major butt! I will pulling an 18 ft. trailer with a Jeep on it alot of weekends as well so it will probably get a workout when doing that. Thanks for the info!
If you watch your timing/knocking I think you could get along without it. I had my timing turned up to 10 degrees before I put charger on. It really helped the low end power. Once I put it on, I put it back to 6 degrees. Like I mentioned, I had it turned down to about minimum and never saw any problems with it.
I know the timing retard version is like $300 or so. I want to put one on my '64 Galaxie(it has a 6-71 bolted on it), but until the money comes around...I just keep the timing down on it. As long as you run decent gas I think you will be okay.
Good luck and have fun with it. Glad to hear yours is a stick shift. Wish mine would have been, but I had bought the truck new off the lot. Didn't want to wait to order one. I did order the next two Super Duty's, and they WERE stick shifts!
OK, I finally got a picture of what all I am getting. What other big parts am I going to need with it aside from the fuel pump? Any help is appreciated, thanks!
Silicone tubing that connects all the plastic stuff together.
I see the pressure line and tee, that's good. The drain line is there also. Just need a brass fitting to connect to pass. valve cover. That will be the hardest job(getting cover off), at least it was for me back when truck was new. There are lines bolted to back of head that you need to get loose before you can raise the cover off. It was just a beech getting bolts out of brackets behind head.
I would get the parts list out and start making a basic list. It's all the little stuff that will add up in the end. You have the big stuff, just need all the little parts to make it all work proper.
Cool thanks man. Getting the valve cover off shouldn't be a problem. My buddy works at a dealership so we are probably going to do it up there on a saturday or something. I looked at the parts list and gathered up the other main parts that I am going to need, how does this list look?
- Fuel Pump
- T-stat housing
- Belt and Idler Pulley
- Fuel Management Unit
Those are the other main parts that I saw it looked like I needed. Anything else you can think of? Thanks man you have been a big help.
