I have an "00" sport with the prem. sound option..........I didn't want to change the head unit so I bought an AMP and 4 polk speakers (db series). Does the factory head unit have RCA pre-outs? Is there a place I can get the wiring schematic if not? Would mounting under the rear seat be OK? (venilation wise).Any info would be great......................
You'll notice a HUGE increase in your sound with a new HU. I have premium sound in my '00 SD. I used to run the factory deck with an amp through the factory speakers (incl. a jl audio 10") and it made a pretty big difference. But when I went with an aftermarket deck, it made all the difference. You can use the factory deck with the amp, you'll need to purchase line converters (depending on how many channels your amp is). The speaker wires (coming out of the deck) connect to the line converter and that converts it to a rca signal, then you run your rca's from the converter to the amps. It's a pita though, you're better off just buying an inexpensive ($150) deck with rca's pre-outs.
And yes, mounting the amp under the seat should be fine assuming you have sufficient space in there (as most cars/trucks do). Make sure if the seat is adjusted that it won't hit the amp too. Umm, what else. Oh yeah, a wiring schematic. You can go to www.the12volt.com for a wiring schematic, or better yet, spend a lil' bit more money and go get a chilton's manual for your truck. Then you have everything you need to know about it. Good luck!
Thanks for the Info............I already got the amp etc.....so Im gonna stick with that (had a HU stolen before so I want it to look factory). The amp came with the line converters so I should be ok there. Im not that picky with car audio (home is a diff. story) so anything has to better than the factory set-up (I hope). Im gonna send 60W rms to all 4 polks.............what gauge s/wire do you rec'd? Thanks 4 ur help............
Since you're not running any subs, you won't need to go with super thick wiring, but definitely get some good rca's, that'll help with the quality. As far as power and ground wiresfor the amp, depending on what the amp will accept, you can probably go with something around a 6 gauge wire. I'm not really sure though, it's going to depend on your amp. I'm only running 1 10" and my 4 (factory) speakers off my ppi amp (art series 6 channel) but I ran it all in 2 gauge wire (ground/power). I think I used 10-12 for the speakers (went thicker for the sub).
Hope that helps, I'm sure others will be along to add/comment on this.
